In mid-January, Vitus Bering departed from St. Petersburg, and on March 1st reached the Sea of Okhotsk where its base is located, after having covered nearly 13,000 nautical miles in 45 days.
Upon completion of loading and bunkering operations at Vanino port, the vessel proceeded to the drilling platform Orlan located in the northern part of the Sea of Okhotsk on the coastal shelf of the Sakhalin Island. Traveling time to the platform was 2.5 days.
The icebreaker Vitus Bering was designed for year-round support of offshore drilling platforms. It will supply the drilling platform Orlan and participate in the outfitting of Berkut platform. The OSV is intended to operate in severe climatic conditions and in ice of up to 1.5 meters thick.
The ship's crew is 21 people. All of them are Russian nationals.
This January, a naming ceremony for the new icebreaker Vitus Bering of SCF Group was carried out. The Russian flag was displayed on the ship built by Russian and Finnish shipwrights. The President of Russia Vladimir Putin took part in the naming ceremony.
