Organizers of 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro will be recommended to make use of experience of Russian power engineers in Sochi

IOC delegates arrived to carry out a regular comprehensive inspection of energy systems readiness to 2014 Winter Olympics.

Organizers of 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro will be recommended to make use of Russian power engineers’ experience in construction of power grid infrastructure in Sochi, said John Paul Giancarlo, head of IOC Technology Department during working meeting with Oleg Budargin, chairman of the Management Board of the Federal Grid Company of Unified Energy System, which was held earlier in Sochi.

In the course of the meeting, power supply management issues were discussed, as well as interaction of organizations and agencies in provision of reliable power supply in the Olympic region.

John Paul Giancarlo, head of IOC Technology Department, noted that Russian power engineers carried out a stupendous work for the last few years.

‘For the first time I visited Sochi in 2009. Today I see the job done for the last four years is a unique one. An important point is that the infrastructure which is being constructed shall not merely provide a reliable power supply for the competitions but also contribute to the dynamic city development over a long period,’ said Giancarlo. As of today most of power facilities are put into operation or energized, the rest of them are at the final stage of construction and installation.

Power Supply Management Center (PSMC) providing communication between all the power facilities in Sochi and Joint Safety Center (JSC) received a high appraisal during the visit.

‘It is important that you are not only able to quickly liquidate the aftermath of emergency situations but also to make risk forecasts. You perfectly understand and feel the region’s energy system’ stressed Dimitrios Beis, IOC Energy Consultant. ‘The most important thing is that you realize that all the parties involved in Olympic Games power supply must work together as a single team. Just so you can reach good results’.

‘Summarizing the results of the visit we fully understand that everything will be completed in line with the schedule’, stressed the expert and also noted that we need to develop clear mechanisms of interaction between all services responsible for energy system operation during the time left.

Oleg Budargin, CEO of the Federal Grid Company thanked the members of the international delegation and expressed confidence that IOC experts will provide cooperation and give necessary consultations in coordination of the plan of Sochi power district grid facilities operation during the Olympic Games.

During the meeting it was also noted that the critical object we need to focus our attention on is the 10/0.4 kV power distribution grid of Imereti lowland. Federal Grid Company is responsible for technical supervision of the grid construction, acceptance of commissioning works on power facilities as well as their subsequent operation.

The visit was the fifth inspection of Sochi power grid infrastructure by IOC energy experts. During the previous visits inspectors examined FGC power facilities in the coastal cluster – substations 220 kV Psou, 110 kV Izumrudnaya, Imeterinskaya, Ledovy Dvorets, Vremennaya and Veseloye, in the mountain cluster – substations 220 kV Poselkovaya, 110 kV Mzymta and 10 kV distribution grid facilities for electric supply to Rosa Khutor Alpine Resort.
