Inter RAO Group signs a contract for the expansion of Termogas Machala thermal power plant in Ecuador

The Board of LLC Inter RAO – Export, a fully owned subsidiary of JSC Inter RAO, and CELEC, an Ecuadorian state-owned energy corporation, signed an agreement to build a gas-turbine power generation unit and a steam turbine at Termogas Machala gas-fired power plant.

Termogas Machala will be the first thermal power plant in Ecuador to operate in combined steam-gas cycle. Its installed capacity will increase by 170 MW to 300 MW.

Termogas Machala is located 7 kilometers from the Pacific Ocean in El Oro Province in Southwest Ecuador. It currently has two GE 6FA gas turbine units rated at 65 MW each.

The new agreement includes turnkey design, delivery, construction, installation and launch of an additional 6FA gas turbine and a 100 MW steam turbine, as well as construction of additional transmission lines and upgrades of two existing substations.

The whole project is valued at approximately $230 million. CELEC will finance the project using an export loan from Roseximbank extended against sovereign guarantees by the Republic of Ecuador.

“The new agreement expands the cooperation between Inter RAO Group and the Republic of Ecuador in the energy sector,” said Maksim SERGEEV, Chief Executive of LLC INTER RAO – Export. “We are already working on delivery of the full range of electromechanical equipment for the 252 MW Toachi Pilaton hydro power plant, and we are looking for other mutually beneficial projects in the energy sector of Ecuador.”
