The plants were constructed by Gesellschaft für umweltfreundliche Energieerzeugung mbH (GfU). The two plants are supplying residential housing and commercial property in central Erfurt with electricity and heat.
Combined heat-and-power plants allow the waste heat produced when electricity is generated to be used on-site. That means the plants make better use of the energy available, making them much more efficient than conventional energy supply featuring large, centralized power generation and individual domestic heating units.
“Combined heat and power has a central role to play for Germany’s energy transition, because it can be used to provide the energy where it is needed – no matter the weather. We’ll continue to expand our decentralized energy supply activities in the future”, says Timo Vehrs, Director of Business Development at GAZPROM Germania GmbH.
