Chernobyl NPP: The first stage of 3rd lifting of the NSC Arch’s Eastern part was performed

At the moment the installation of the Arch’s segments and activities on preparation for the second stage of lifting are in progress at the site. Total weight of the Arch to be lifted will be 11,516 tons. Completion of activities on the second stage is planned for October 2013. Following completion of the lifting works, the Arch’s Eastern part will reach the design height and will be moved towards the Shelter Object. The works on assembling the metal structures of the Arch’s Western part will commence at the emptied site.
The New Safe Confinement (NSC) as a multifunctional facility with a design life of 100 years in future will enable to perform the removal of the fuel containing materials, being in the Shelter Object, and their conditioning for subsequent safe storage.
