Ноября 21, 2013

More than 20 Russian scientists, representatives of ten scientific institutions within the Rosatom State Nuclear Energy Corporation of the Russian Federation visited the IAEA and discussed possible cooperation with colleagues and experts from the Department of Nuclear Sciences and Applications.

The delegation presented their R&D work in various areas of non-power nuclear applications. Among the topics discussed were: radiation technology in food and agriculture, radiation medicine, radioisotope production, accelerators and nuclear instrumentation, environmental protection, and a variety of industrial applications.

The Rosatom delegation also visited the IAEA Nuclear Sciences and Applications laboratories in Seibersdorf, where the IAEA experts presented applied research projects, training and capacity building activities, and technical and analytical services provided to Member States (reference materials, quality control and quality assurance services). The project for the Renovation of the Nuclear Applications Laboratories in Seibersdorf (ReNuAL Project) was presented to the delegation.

"There are infinite possibilities for the IAEA to help Member States build both individual and institutional capacities. We will continue to support capacity building in all of our thematic areas. At the same time we wish to increasingly leverage networks, partnerships and the existing capacities of Member State organizations like Rosatom," said Daud Mohamad, Deputy Director General and Head of the IAEA Department of Nuclear Sciences and Applications.

Vyacheslav Pershukov, Rosatom's Deputy Director General and Director of Directorate for Scientific and Technical Complex, was pleased with the visit. "Direct contacts were established, a scientific dialogue was conducted, and new areas of long-term cooperation were identified. We are interested in the exchange of information and knowledge in the area of nuclear applications. Together with the IAEA, Rosatom can contribute to sustainable development in developing countries."

The two day visit showed that there is a lot of potential for future cooperation between the two organizations and that the experience of the Russian Federation in non-power nuclear applications is a good basis for future collaboration.
