Allocation of Funds for Ignalina NPP Decommissioning Was Adopted by the EU

Декабря 27, 2013

European Union (EU) Council adopted the regulation on Union support for nuclear decommissioning assistance program in Lithuania.

The separate EU program was approved foreseeing the 450,8 million EUR financial support fund for implementation of Ignalina NPP decommissioning within the period 2014-2020.

The regulation was adopted based on the provisions of the accession to the European Union Treaty under which the EU undertook to provide adequate financial support for Ignalina NPP decommissioning, to assure uninterrupted support for Ignalina program and to provide the support for Lithuania according to the clauses foreseen in the accession Treaty. Advantageous exception for Lithuania is included in the program following which the INPP decommissioning funding base shall be not the Euratom Treaty, but the accession to the European Union Treaty. Under the above mentioned Ignalina Nuclear Power Plant decommissioning will continue to be funded after 2020 year as well.

Twice higher financial support for Ignalina program comparing with the initial proposal of European Commission has been achieved (from 229 to 450,8 million EUR) during the negotiations regarding the regulation.

293 million EUR was allocated for Bulgaria and 225 million EUR was allocated for Slovakia for the period 2014-2020.
