Bulgaria confirms interest in South Stream gas pipeline project

Мая 06, 2014

Minister of Economy and Energy of Bulgaria Dragomir Stoynev confirmed that his country is interested in constructing the South Stream gas pipeline while criticizing recent calls of the European Commission to abandon the project.

The pipeline will be laid on the bottom of the Black Sea and will uninterruptedly supply Europe with up to 63 bcm of natural gas per year.

Mr. Stoynev reminded that South Stream is a long-term European infrastructural project of the highest priority not only for Bulgaria. The construction of the pipeline is to start this year.

The head of Bulgarian Ministry of Foreign Affairs Kristian Vigenin also made a statement in support of the project: “We do not have to become hostages of economic, political and financial instability of the gas transit states.”

The President of Bulgaria Rosen Plevneliev has earlier expressed hope that South Stream pipeline project will be implemented in full compliance with the market laws and will be synchronized with the European regulations since Bulgaria is a EU member state.
