Atomproyekt has developed a project for construction of the highest evaporative cooling tower in Russia

Августа 08, 2014

Two towers almost 180 meters high will be built at Kurskaya NPP-2 by 2020.

Overall dimensions of cooling towers for a nuclear power plant were approved based on tender requirements and climatic characteristics of the construction site. The height of each tower in the project amounted to 179 meters, with diameter of the foundation of 142.5 meters, and irrigated area of 14.3 m2.

As per the road map of the State Atomic Energy Corporation Rosatom, two power units of Kurskaya NPP-2 are supposed to be put in service in 2020 in Kurchatovsky district of the Kursk region. They will replace capacities of the existing plant. The first line of the cooling tower will consist of two power units and two evaporative cooling towers making part of the turbine plant cooling system.

The projects developed by Atomproyekt were used for construction of over 100 cooling towers for thermal and nuclear power plants in Russia and in the former USSR countries. As of today, cooling towers are under construction at Leningradskaya NPP-2 and Belorusskaya NPP, as well as at the South-West CHPP in Saint Petersburg.

A cooling tower is a very important facility of the nuclear plant infrastructure. The purpose of this hydraulic structure is cooling of water in the NPP circulation water supply systems. The amount of water to be cooled in the cooling tower 150 meters high comes to about 170000 m3/hour.
