Banatski Dvor UGS facility – extra guarantee of reliable supplies to Europe this winter

Октября 12, 2014

As part of the 4th St. Petersburg International Gas Forum, a working meeting took place between Alexey Miller, Chairman of the Gazprom Management Committee and Dusan Bajatovic, Director General of state-owned Srbijagas.

The parties addressed the bilateral cooperation in the gas sector, placing an emphasis on Russian gas supplies to Serbia as well as the use of Serbian underground reservoirs to store natural gas in the country.

It was highlighted that Gazprom had almost fully replenished the Banatski Dvor UGS facility. The facility's working gas volume currently makes up 450 million cubic meters. Therefore, Banatski Dvor will provide an extra resource for supplying Serbian consumers with Russian gas as well as enhance the reliability of Russian gas export to Serbia, Hungary, Bosnia and Herzegovina in the coming winter.

Moreover, the meeting participants looked at the status of the South Stream joint infrastructure project which is currently awaiting permits for the construction of the Serbian section.

In 2013 Gazprom supplied Serbia with some 2 billion cubic meters of gas.

In 2011 the Banatski Dvor underground storage with working gas volume of 450 million cubic meters was put onstream in Serbia as the first facility of South Stream to secure the reliability of gas supplies via the gas pipeline.

South Stream is Gazprom's global infrastructure project aimed at constructing a gas pipeline with a capacity of 63 billion cubic meters across the Black Sea to Southern and Central Europe for the purpose of diversifying the natural gas export routes and eliminating transit risks. The first gas will be supplied via South Stream in late 2015. The gas pipeline will reach its full capacity in 2018. South Stream Serbia joint project company (Gazprom and Srbijagas holding 51 and 49 per cent stakes respectively) is implementing the project in Serbia.

The South Stream project was awarded the special status by the resolution of the Serbian Parliament.

In 2013 a long-term contract was signed for Russian gas supplies to Serbia in the amount of up to 1.5 billion cubic meters of gas annually for a period of 10 years. Gas is being conveyed via the existing route and in the future – via the South Stream gas pipeline.
