Rosenergoatom and French utility Electricite de France celebrated 20 years of fruitful cooperation

Ноября 22, 2014

A meeting of the Coordinating Committee on the cooperation between Rosenergoatom and Electricite de France (EDF) was held in Moscow. The meeting was dedicated to the 20th anniversary of the Russian-French relations in the field of nuclear power and operation of nuclear power plants (NPPs).

By date, the cooperation between Rosenergoatom and EDF has embraced nearly all areas of nuclear reactor operation, i.e. from the work with the personnel through arrangements for efficient procurement, from engineering and support of operation through nuclear risks and insurance. “Rosenergoatom is the world’s second utility, after EDF, in terms of installed capacity. And our 20-year cooperation with the French, which is equal and mutually beneficial, is aimed at achieving two outmost goals, i.e. operational safety and efficiency,” Vladimir Asmolov, the First Deputy General Director of Rosenergoatom, said.

Oleg Chernikov, the First Deputy Director for Production and NPP Operation of Rosenergoatom, in turn noted: “Rosenergoatom and EDF are two largest utilities in Europe, which have long-lasting operating experience, and we have what to discuss and to share. For example, we deal with current issues related to the well-known problem of graphite reactors. There are also areas related to human resources policy and radioactive material management policy. Now we consider the broadening of the cooperation, including in the entire lifecycle of NPPs, embracing decommissioning. And all these are just part of our cooperation, which task is to exchange the experience for the sake of safe and efficient operation of our plants.”

The Coordinating Committee meeting summed up results of the 2014 cooperation program and outlined specific plans and measures for 2015 in nine areas: operation; engineering and support of operation; new projects; fast neutron reactors; inspections and control; personnel training; procurement; civil liability for nuclear damage and insurance; general organization and development. In addition, the parties agreed to put two new areas on the program, such as “research and development” and “decommissioning and waste management”. A protocol on prolongation of the existing agreement and on strengthening the cooperation in various areas of nuclear power was signed to confirm the intentions.

Besides, at the Coordinating Committee meeting Yevgeny Romanov, the Head of Rosenergoatom, handed out awards. Noël Camarcat, the Co-Chairman of the Coordinating Committee REA-EDF and head of the fast neutron reactors area was awarded with a Rosenergoatom’s golden medal “For Merits in Improving Safety of Nuclear Power Plants”. Bernard Roche (Co-Chairman of the Coordinating Committee REA-EDF from 2001 until 2007) was given a ROSATOM’s medal “60 Years of Nuclear Power”. The awards were given for a significant contribution to the development of nuclear science, power generation and industry, the strengthening of the cooperation and interaction, the support of successful execution of works in the field of the use of atomic energy.
