Surveillance specimens are necessary for maintaining control over mechanical properties of the metal used in production of a reactor vessel. Surveillance specimens are installed inside the reactor vessel and are subjected to increased temperatures and neutron currents. First extraction of surveillance specimens is carried out in five years after the power unit is launched, and then the procedure is repeated every 5 to 8 years. Results obtained from testing surveillance specimens allow to validate operating capability and safety of the reactor unit.
Surveillance specimens must comply with the most demanding requirements set by Russian and international standards. In January the first 1,320 surveillance specimens of various types, sizes and purposes were successfully approved (on the first attempt) by inspections from Safety federal enterprise and Izhorskiye Zavody.
OMZ Izhora will produce a total of 5,456 surveillance specimens under this contract. The contract is due in April 2015.
