The new Air Quality Control Systems (AQCS) will be installed on four existing conventional oil & gas-fired boilers, that are being retrofitted by the project turnkey contractor Power Machines company, in order to burn petroleum coke.
Alstom has been selected to equip the retrofitted boilers with its advanced Electrostatic Precipitators (ESPs) to remove particulate matter and DeNOx systems through Selective catalytic reduction (SCR). The distinctive feature of the Alstom AQCS for this project is the integrated installation of DeNOx and ESPs.
Once the Alstom AQCS is operating, power plant emissions will be reduced to a maximum of 200 mg/Nm3 of NOx and 20 mg/Nm3 of particulates, in full compliance with the latest European and Russian standards (3). Alstom is also localizing in Russia manufacturing of up to 80% of the equipment for this project.

On this project, we are building upon our vast AQCS experience on more than 500 GWe of power plants worldwide, burning all types of fuels including petcoke. We are convinced that this solution will be used as an example for many other power stations across Russia and CIS."
The retrofit of Nizhnekamskaya CHPP-2, due for completion in 2017, will provide for conversion from gas to petroleum coke, enabling the end customer, Tatneft JSC, to implement a "closed-cycle" energy strategy by self-utilization of an oil refining by-product (Petroleum coke) and combined heat and power generation.
Nizhnekamskaya TPP-2 is a petrochemical facility commissioned in January 1980. It is located in Nizhnekamsk (the Republic of Tatarstan) and incorporates a captive power plant producing both heat and power. The power plant main equipment includes 9 utility boilers, 2 hot-water boilers and 5 turbo-generators. The current (pre-retrofit), rated electric power output of Nizhnekamskaya TPP-2 is 380 MW and thermal power output is 1580 Gcal/h.
