This was the topic of a report presented at a conference held in Tyumen to mark the 40th anniversary of the Federal State Unitary Enterprise ZapSibNIIGG, by Aleksey Popov, JSC Rosgeologia’s Head of the Administration of Geological Prospecting and Exploration Project Portfolio.
“The Pre-Jurassic Oil and Gas Complex currently attracts no interest from mining companies due to the insignificant volume of confirmed reserves, great reservoir depths, and poorly-researched drilling, but in the future it will become one of the main sources of mineral resource base replenishment,” he noted.
A large portion of the Western Siberian oil and gas province is formed by the Cretaceous and Jurassic OGC, which are the main targets of development.
Only 1.5% of the all sites on the State Register of Mineral Reserves of the Russian Federation (Petroleum) is from the Pre-Jurassic OGC. This amounts to about 250 sites.
“The issue of replenishment of the Russian Federation’s mineral resource base is quite critical, and active work in this direction is urgently required, through prospecting in promising regions for hydrocarbons and study of deep horizons,” remarked Popov. “A possible source of growth for the Western Siberian resource base is the study of the Pre-Jurassic basal complex. An accurate assessment of the potential of this OGC is required.” To stimulate the study of the Pre-Jurassic OGC in this region, a significant increase in parametric drilling work funded by the federal budget is recommended. It would also be advisable to consider the possibility of including requirements for mandatory drilling of at least 1 prospecting borehole to Pre-Jurassic formations of at least 1,000m depth in licensing agreements with subsoil users (southern Tyumen Region, Khanty-Mansiisk Autonomous District). A partial compensation for such operations was also suggested. The recommendations were well-supported by the conference participants.
