To mark this occasion, a Russian delegation will visit its partner city in Hessen as part of the traditional “Summer School” developed and organized by the Management School of the University of Kassel, UNIKIMS, together with Wintershall and the city of Kassel. From 14 to 21 June 2015, eight administrative employees from Russia will inform themselves about best practices in administration, education and culture. Public sector employees from both cities will take it in turns to visit their twin city as part of an exchange program. A regular student exchange between the Friedrichsgymnasium grammar school in Kassel and the Novy Urengoy grammar school also forms part of the cooperation between the two cities.
Wintershall, Germany’s largest internationally active oil and gas producer, has been working in and with Russia for over 25 years. One of the company’s most important production sites is situated in Novy Urengoy. Wintershall initiated the city partnership with Kassel in 2005 to mark the 30th anniversary of the founding of the Russian city.
To celebrate this milestone, today Kassel city councilor Christian Geselle opens the summer school and a photo exhibition entitled “Novy Urengoy – The embodiment of the Russian pioneering spirit” in Kassel’s city hall. Wintershall CEO Mario Mehren explained, “The city partnership and its summer school is a unique platform for the exchange of know-how and culture between Germany and Russia. This exchange is more important than ever – especially in light of the political situation. As a company that is active in Russia, we are delighted to set an example of dialog and partnership by actively supporting this exemplary project, and in so doing to make our small contribution to German-Russian relations.
”The highlight of the celebrations, a ceremony in Park Schönfeld, will take place on the evening of 17 June, when representatives of the two cities, the university of Kassel and Wintershall will pay tribute to the Hessen-Russian success story. Opening statements will be delivered by Bertram Hilgen, mayor of Kassel, Nadezhda Bondar, deputy director of Novy Urengoy city council, Professor Rolf-Dieter Postlep, president of the university of Kassel and Ties Tiessen, Member of the Wintershall Board of Executive Directors. For Ties Tiessen, the city partnership doesn’t just take place on the political stage: “The cooperation between Kassel and Novy Urengoy shows that alongside the political and technical exchange, deep-rooted friendships have formed on all levels. Both sides benefit from this. We owe our gratitude particularly to those who have invested so much time and commitment in the last decade to make this important and personal exchange possible.
”The participants of this year’s summer school can expect a comprehensive program of events with numerous presentations, workshops, and discussions as well as visits to cultural, social and educational projects and guided tours of the city. And for the first time the focus will be on Kassel-based institutions that are not part of the core administration. Mayor Hilgen firmly believes: “This year’s program for the summer school will give our Russian guests an even deeper insight into the work, possibilities and structures in Kassel. At the same time, the city partnership will become part of the consciousness of urban society. That also strengthens relations between the cities as well as promoting mutual understanding and learning cooperation.” A fixed item on the summer school agenda is also a visit to the headquarters of Wintershall. During the guided tour this coming Wednesday the participants from Novy Urengoy can find out about the company history as well Wintershall’s current projects. A particular highlight will be the visit to the 3D visualization room, where the guest will embark on a virtual journey to the earth’s core and learn how the engineers and geologists at Wintershall detect oil and gas deposits in the various strata.
