The fish pass was built in 1937 at the same time as the power plant and became the first one of the kind in the country. The 500-meter long structure consists of 64 wells that imitate a mountain river. There are stones on the bottom to make fish less afraid to go upwards. In the early summer, salmon will go upstream the Tuloma river for spawning. In the late summer, the fish and their young offspring will begin their way back to the sea.
“Every year, we repair the damage that was done to the concrete structures and clean them from the garbage that the water brings” said Igor Patsan, Director of the Tuloma and Serebryanskiye HPPs Cascade. “We are doing everything to make the operation of the structure reliable and durable, to mitigate the impact of the industrial facility on natural processes, and to preserve the population of the fish, which is a key commercial species for our region”.
