Bangladesh, in its efforts to look for newer resources for Power Generation, is investing heavily on Solar Power Generation, which is seen as an alternative source of energy. Every month more than 70,000 Solar Home Systems (SHS) are being installed in Bangladesh in a bid to reduce greenhouse emissions and ensures sustainable development in the energy sector. Every month those solar home systems are adding around 2 MW of electricity.
The amount of investment in this energy sector in rural area per year is more than Bangladesh Taka 2100 crore. 40% of this invested in solar panel, a significant number of the total number of which requires to be imported from outside. 40% is invested in battery and the rest 20% in small electronics parts. Batteries and accessories are all produced in the country. The country has a total 80 MW of yearly solar Panel Manufacturing facilities delivering locally prepared panels in the IDCOL SHS program.
Under the ‘Rural Electrification and Renewable Energy Development (RERED) Programme’ a total of 64,000 SHSs were installed by 2007. So far, a total of more than 2.2 Million SHSs with a capacity of about 90 MWp have been installed throughout the country, which still leaves colossal room for expansion.
