Following Enel’s entry into the Green Button Alliance, the Enel Group’s Head of Global Infrastructure and Networks Livio Gallo was elected a Member of the Alliance’s Board.
By joining the Alliance, Enel will test the Green Button standard with its Italian customers, specifically with those involved in its L’Aquila smart city, Puglia Active Network and H2020 Flexiciency projects and equipped with Enel Smart Info1. These customers will be allowed to download their real-time energy consumption data in a standard Green Button format and process it with software and applications of their choosing.
Customers involved in Green Button testing will download their energy consumption data simply by clicking on the Green Button Download My Data icon, which is available online through the Enel Energy Management System web application. Through the Green Button Connect My Data option, they will be able to authorise a different company to gather their energy consumption data directly without sharing their login credentials. This means that data collection and analysis will be improved and simplified while protecting customer privacy. As a result, Enel and other companies, including those working on smart home solutions, will be able to use that detailed energy consumption data to develop advanced applications for customers in areas like energy efficiency and home automation.
The Green Button standard2, once implemented by Enel and tested by the company in cooperation with the Green Button Alliance, is expected to provide Enel with a competitive advantage by enhancing the range of value-added services it will be able to offer its customers.
The L’Aquila smart city project results from the collaboration between Enel Distribuzione and local authorities that was kick-started in December 2013. It aims to provide new services for both local people and government by enhancing grid management and automation, improving grid integration of renewables, creating a network of 80 electric vehicle recharge points and distributing 43,000 Smart Info devices.
Puglia Active Network is an Enel Distribuzione project launched within the framework of the EU NER 300 second call for proposals for innovative low-carbon energy demonstration projects. Enel Distribuzione is launching a series of works on distribution networks in scarcely populated areas of the Apulia region in order to enhance the integration of renewables, which are widespread across those areas. Enel is also installing a network of 258 electric vehicle recharge points across the Apulia region as well as distributing around 30,000 Smart Info devices.
The H2020 Flexiciency project was launched in February 2015 within the framework of the European Commission’s Horizon 2020 research programme. The project aims to combine the flexibility of the European energy market with efficiency by exploiting the full potential of smart meters. H2020 Flexiciency involves the construction of five demonstration projects, one of which will be developed by Enel, using the Active Energy Management system developed for the smart grid at Expo 2015. The Enel demo project aims to demonstrate how access to data through smart meters can enable the launching of innovative customer services, such as advanced energy consumption monitoring. The Enel project will involve 5,000 final customers.
