The period from 9 to 13 of November was the Week of the Nuclear Power at Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (Brazil).
Among the participants of the Nuclear Power Week was Roberto Lecher, Dean of the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro; Professor Alessandro Gonçalves da Cruz, Nuclear Engineering Coordinator; Luis Pinguelli Rosa, Eletrobras ex-president; Marcelo Gomes, Vice President of the Brazilian Atomic Energy Association; and Leonam Guimarães Planning Director of Eletronuclear. The participants discussed the technology evolution of nuclear reactors and solutions for the energy matrix of Brazil.
Within the main program, on November 10, Ivan Dybov, Rosatom’s Vice President in Brazil, presented a report on Russian nuclear technologies and possible application of Rosatom’s experience on Latin America market. He said that above the competences in NPP construction and power generation, the company also possesses the expertise and solutions in various areas, such as the nuclear medicine and agriculture, where the nuclear technology may replace pesticides, used for products storage. The cooperation area of no less importance is the supply of isotopes that are very important for the nuclear medicine, in particular, for cancer diagnostics and treatment. At present Rosatom is the isotope supplier for the National Nuclear Energy Commission of Brazil (CNEN).
Ivan Dybov also pointed out that the company is interested in supplies of fuel for research reactors in Latin America. ‘We can provide fuel even for a non-Russian design reactor,’ added the speaker. He specifically focused on Rosatom’s unique integrated approach to NPP construction. Another area that was highlighted in the speech is the construction of a nuclear research reactor. A month ago Rosatom and Bolivia signed the Memorandum under which the latter may become one of the first countries in the region possessing one of the most power equipment for various researches in the area of the nuclear technology.
The second presentation of the speaker was on Rosatom’s approach to personnel training in the nuclear power industry. Ivan Dybom told about the existing training and further training system used by the company all over the world, he also emphasized the strategic partnership with the National Research Nuclear University MEPhI. Within the framework of this cooperation, foreign students including those from Brazil may become the participants of the nuclear experts training program.
Russian – Brazilian cooperation in the nuclear power is regulated by the Agreement signed by the Government of the Russian Federation and Federative Republic of Brazil on cooperation in peaceful use of the nuclear power of September 15, 1994. Brazil and Russia signed the Memorandum of Understanding on June 21, 2009.
In February 2014, Isotope JSC, Rosatom’s subsidiary, signed the contract with the National Nuclear Energy Commission of Brazil (CNEN) on Russian Мо-99 supplies.
In August 11, 2014 Rosatom International Network and Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ) signed a cooperation agreement. At present, the parties to the said contract are working on implementation of mutually beneficial scientific&research and business projects. In June 2015, Rosatom International Network established ROSATOM América Latina that is Rosatom’s office in Rio de Janeiro and Rosatom’s headquarters in Latin America.
