In half a year, Eesti Energia wind parks produced over one-third more electricity than a year ago

Августа 31, 2017

The four wind farms of Enefit Taastuvenergia, a subsidiary of Eesti Energia, produced 107 gigawatt-hours of electricity in the first six months of 2017 - the production volume has increased by 37% as compared to the same period of 2016.

The head of Enefit Taastuvenergia - Aavo Kärmas, has said that the increase in production volume was due to more favorable wind conditions and increased availability of wind turbine parks compared to last year. "Volumes of electricity production have increased in all four parks of the company's wind farms - in Aulepa, Narva, Paldiski and Virtsu. Though we are not able to control the wind, in opposition to this - the good work of engineers on improving the availability of wind turbines is really commendable. To make it clear how large this amount of electricity is - 107 gigawatt hours - this amount will be enough for a whole year for about 43 000 households with an average volume of consumption," added Aavo Kärmas.

According to the data of Elering - the Estonian transmission system operator, wind farms in Estonia produced 333 gigawatt-hours of electricity in the first six months of 2017, that is, 36% more than in the previous year. The production of Enefit Taastuvenergia wind turbine parks amounted to 32% of the total production of wind farms in Estonia.

Wind turbine park of Enefit Taastuvenergia in Aulepa is the most powerful in Estonia, it is located in Läänemaa. The wind park consists of 16 wind power generators, and its capacity is 48 megawatts. Aulepa wind farm produces about 80 gigawatt-hours of electricity in a year.

What makes special the wind turbine park in Narva is the fact that it was created at the closed ash dump of the Baltic Power Plant. Thus, the wastes of oil shale energy production have become the foundation for the fleet of wind turbines. Narva wind farm consists of 17 wind power generators, and its total capacity is 39 megawatts.

Paldiski wind farm, located on the Paldiski peninsula, is the newest wind farm of Enefit Taastuvenergia, it was built in 2013. Nine wind turbines with a total capacity of 22.5 megawatts produce electricity in Paldiski wind farm.

There are two wind power generators of Enefit Taastuvenergia in Virtsu, the first of which was installed in 2002. Virtsu wind farm was the first wind turbine park in Estonia that complies with modern requirements. Despite the fact that we are talking about the oldest wind farm of Enefit Taastuvenergia, its availability indicators are very good. The capacity of two wind power generators in Virtsu is 1.4 megawatts.

The total capacity of the Enefit Taastuvenergia wind farms is 111 megawatts.

Enefit Taastuvenergia is an enterprise owned by Eesti Energia, which produces renewable energy, generating electricity and heat from wind, water, biomass and mixed municipal waste. The production units of the enterprise are the Iru power station, the Paide and Valka co-production stations, and four wind power parks. Enefit Taastuvenergia also manages the Keila-Joa and Linnamäe hydropower plants.

The government announced a desire to enter the stock exchange with a minority stake in Enefit Taastuvenergia. Eesti Energia Group is now engaged in preliminary analysis of the prospective listing of Enefit Taastuvenergia on the Tallinn stock exchange.
