Artificial Intelligence helped reduce by half the violations of workplace safety rules at Ladyzhynska TPP

Октября 02, 2020

AI-based Farseer system, which was implemented in February 2020, helped to reduce by half violations of workplace safety rules at Ladyzhynska TPP. Since the beginning of the year, a total of 35 violations were identified, which is two times less than the last year’s indicators, when there were 78 such violations.

“This state-of-the-art video surveillance system is predominantly designed to ensure that every power engineer returns home safe and sound after the work shift. 35 identified and promptly eliminated violations of workplace safety rules are equal to the number of prevented accidents and saved lives”, said Dmytro Sakharuk, DTEK Energy’s General Director.

He also noted that in addition to employee safety, the new technology helps power engineers to contribute to the country’s energy security. “The system controls that there are no unauthorized interventions in the equipment operation or enterprise shutdown”, emphasized D. Sakharuk.

According to Emanuele Volpe, Chief Innovation Officer at DTEK, this system works using computer vision and neural networks. “The technology analyzes the image from surveillance cameras in a real time and instantly records violations: if the stuff doesn’t use a protective helmet/goggles or appear in a prohibited area. This information is immediately transmitted to the responsible person, ”said E. Volpe. He also added that the Farseer system developer is the Ukrainian technological association Limpid Group. E. Volpe highlighted that it is important for DTEK to find innovative solutions in Ukraine and, thus, to support talented youth and developers.

As described by Anatoliy Netreba, Head of the Labour Protection and Industrial Safety Department at DTEK Ladyzhynska TPP, currently the enterprise is equipped with 25 operating cameras with a range of up to 60 metres. They are installed in the areas requiring special attention in terms of safety. “During the period of system operation, power engineers started treating their safety with more awareness and neglect the rules of safe behaviour at enterprise less. For each case, we conduct pre-emptive conversations and take measures to prevent the recurrence of the situation.” A. Netreba stated.

The AI-based video surveillance system at Ladyzhynska TPP has been operating in a test mode for six months now. In addition to the lack of a safety helmet or eye-shield, the AI will soon register smoking in undesignated areas and will track elevated works without a safety harness.  After the testing is completed at Ladyzhynska TPP, DTEK intends to implement this technology at its other enterprises as well.
