Procurement of preparatory works for the demolition of Maišiagala RWSF announced

Февраля 25, 2021

The State Enterprise Ignalina Nuclear Power Plant (INPP) announced a public procurement of preparatory works for the demolition of the Maišiagala Radioactive Waste Storage Facility (RWSF) buildings.

This purchase will also include the construction and installation of temporary structures, which are necessary to prepare for the removal of waste from Maišiagala RWSF.

This procurement is the stage of the Maišiagala RWSF decommissioning project, during which the necessary building infrastructure will be installed: temporary structures, engineering networks and communications. The prepared demolition project envisages a temporary structure made of aluminum profile columns and multilayer panels (“caisson”) – a structure of a nuclear facility, where the Contractor will have to install ventilation, radiation control, lighting, fire alarm and other systems. It is expected that after signing the contract in the second quarter of 2021, the Contractor will implement the infrastructure installation works at the Maišiagala RWSF site by the middle of the second quarter of 2022.

The contractor will have to prepare a project for the execution of the works, provide the equipment required for the removal of radioactive waste and radiation control, and participate in the "cold" and "hot" trials. Cold trials will test the operation of systems and equipment without the use of radioactive materials. Hot trials of systems and equipment will be performed using radioactive materials. After the tests, reports will be prepared for the State Atomic Energy Safety Inspectorate (VATESI). The demolition and radioactive waste removal work at Maišiagala RWSF will be carried out by INPP after obtaining a VATESI license for decommissioning and installing all the necessary infrastructure for the safe removal of radioactive waste from the storage facility.

Maišiagala RWSF accumulated radioactive waste generated due to the use of radioactive materials and radioactive sources in industry, medicine, and research fields. In 1989, it was decided to close the storage facility because it did not meet modern environmental requirements. On 15 December 2016, an agreement was signed with the Environmental Projects Management Agency (APVA) on the implementation of the Maišiagala RWSF decommissioning project. It is expected that the radioactive waste will be removed and Maišiagala RWSF area will be rehabilitated by the end of 2023.
