The gas transmission system at the site of the incident consists of two parallel gas pipelines running towards Latvia. The incident occurred in one of them, while the other pipeline was not damaged. The gas supply to the damaged pipeline was immediately cut off and the fire burned until the gas in the pipeline section burned out.
Gas supply to Pasvalys district and other consumers in Northern Lithuania is ensured through a parallel pipeline. Gas supply to Latvia was also restored on the same evening.
According to Mr Nemunas Biknius, CEO of the gas transmission system operator Amber Grid, the section of the pipeline damaged in the incident is expected to be restored within a few days. "Law enforcement authorities and Amber Grid specialists are currently investigating the possible causes of the incident, and so far we have no information about any intentional damage to the pipeline infrastructure caused by third parties," commented N. Biknius.
