The parties discussed the prospects for cooperation in the gas sector between Russia and the European Union. Particular attention was paid to the liberalization of the European gas market and the associated issues of guaranteed energy supply within new infrastructure projects. In addition, Alexey Miller and Guenther Oettinger addressed the diversification of routes for gas supply to European consumers.
“The European Union and Russia represent an integral continental gas market. We are certainly pursuing the objective of reinforcing the energy cooperation with Russia and Gazprom. This is a good reason for paying my first visit beyond the European Union to Moscow. We highly appreciate the 40-year partnership relations in the gas sector and will make best efforts for their further development. For instance, we are planning to intensify the EU – Russia energy dialogue and to provide a wider involvement of such companies as Gazprom and its European partners in discussion and decision-making processes,” stressed Guenther Oettinger at the meeting.
