Summarizing the results of the 5-year plan, TNK-BP announced the following major results in the primary areas of its environmental protection activities:
* Morethan 2,500 hectares of land were completely remediatedand transferred to a government commission in the framework of the “historiclegacy” remediationprogram (land that was polluted as a result of the business activities of prior owners of licensed areas)
* 85% utilization of associated gas was achieved in 2009
* Spills were reduced by 69% compared to 2005 as a result of a program for integrity management of pipelines
* More than 3,500 km of pipelines were rebuilt from 2004—2009 with mandatory security for internal and external protection
* 15% reduction of overall emissions of pollutants into the atmosphere in 2009 compared to 2004
* Growth by one-third in the volume of re-circulated water supply in 2009 compared to 2004
The company is actively introducing innovative technology to modernize its environmental protection measures. At the Uveksky oil depot of Saratovnefteproduct (a subsidiary of the Group), a unique environmental project was completed in 2009. It is a system of remote-controlled floating booms aimed at preventing pollution to the Volgograd reservoir water basin along the Volga River in event of an accidental spill of oil products while loading tankers. 6 million rubles were invested in the project.
