According to him “at present preparatory works on the nuclear power development are carried as well as the issue of NPP construction in Mangystausk region is being developed – this information is provided by PRIME-TASS with reference to ITAR-TASS. There has already been established a joint venture on the construction of the nuclear power plant with Russia, and the feasibility study of the construction of a nuclear power plant in Aktau has been developed.”
Sharipov noted that the nuclear power industry shall occupy the quarter of Kazakhstan power sector, as uranium takes 46% of the total volume of the republic energy sources in the standard fuel units. “Our objective is to construct a nuclear power plant and to achieve the following result: the nuclear power industry shall occupy up to 20% of the power industry”, he summarized.
Sharipov said that this year Kazakhstan intends to extract 18 thousand tons of uranium having been the first in the world in this respect in 2009. At the same time he thinks that the question of necessity to extract such amount of uranium is still open. “In case of intense extraction we can deplete the resources during 70−80 years. And taking into account that nuclear power industry is our future we should approach this problem very carefully”, head of the department stated.
