JSC Mobile GTPP and Ener1 signed an Agreement on realization of joint project of grid energy storage

Октября 07, 2010

JSC FGC UES subsidiary – JSC Mobile GTPP and international company Ener1 announced during Sochi Economic Forum about concluding an Agreement on realization of joint project on grid energy storage (GES).

The Russian Minister of Energy Sergey Shmatko and thee Chairman of JSC FGC UES Management Board Oleg Budargin participated in the signing ceremony. In June 2010 a Memorandum of Understanding on the Agreement issues was signed between Ener1 and JSC FGC UES.
Practicability of using GES systems in power industry consists of the possibility to accumulate excessive electric power generated by power stations during off-peak load periods and its further supply to the grid during peak hours. It enables to ensure more balanced utilization of power plant equipment during day time and not to deactivate certain power plants during night time. In addition, use of GES systems will create conditions for optimal utilization of the grid infrastructure. Currently such systems are widely used in the US and some European countries and represent one of the elements of intelligent grid. In addition they provide for power redundancy in case of contingency in energy system.
Within the Agreement it is planned to conduct detailed investigation of possibilities to use grid electric energy storage systems based on lithium-ion batteries manufactured by Ener1 at the facilities of the Unified national electric grid (UNEG). Two pilot projects are planed for realization in 2011 for the technology testing and adaptation to the Russian electric power conditions. Practicability of GES system utilization for power supply back-up to important customers – he Olympic facilities will be tested in Sochi (Krasnodar Territory). On Valaam Island (Karelia region) the systems will be tested to be used as uninterruptible power supply and basis for EV quick charge station infrastructure.
In accordance with the document Ener1 shall supply equipment complying with the Russian energy system parameters as well as ensure its installation, connecting to the grid and further service maintenance. The first facility trial run is planned for May 2011.
In case of pilot project success JSC Mobile GTPP jointly with JSC FGC UES will consider the possibility of purchasing additional GES systems. In addition, within the Agreement the parties also intend to investigate the issue of localization of lithium-ion battery production on the territory of Russia.
General Director of JSC Mobile GTPP Oleg Bragin highlighted that Ener1 innovative technologies would enable implementation of advanced solutions within the Russian electric grid complex.
“Application of perspective lithium-ion technology in grid energy storage is also required for developing of “smart grids” and confirms the intensiveness of modernization initiatives in the Russian power industry, - said Bruce Curtis, Head of grid energy storage, Ener1.
