E.ON builds first state-of-the-art power station unit in Russia

To mark the occasion, an opening ceremony was arranged which was attended by Igor Setchin, Deputy Prime Minister of the Russian Federation, Andrey Shishkin and Deputy Russian Energy Minister.
On the occasion Bernhard Reutersberg, member of the E.ON Board of Management, stated: "This project makes it quite clear what E.ON actually means with its new cleaner & better energy strategy. In Shatura we are setting up the most efficient and modern power station in Russia based on the state-of-the-art technology. With an efficiency of about 56 percent, E.ON is setting new standards here in terms of efficiency and climate compatibility of power production. Shatura is the first project we are implementing as part of our billion euro investments in Russia. In this manner we want to modernize Russia’s power industry and make energy supplies to Russian residential and industrial customers more reliable, efficient and climate-friendly."
"Commissioning of the new Shatura power station marks the successful start of our investment program in Russian power generation. This is due not least to good cooperation with the Russian government. We are at the same time contributing towards modernizing the Russian power sector," said Sergei Tazin, General Director of E.ON Russia.
The new power station has far lower CO2 emissions than the older and less efficient plants with a similar capacity. With this power station alone, carbon dioxide emissions can be cut by over a million tonnes by the end of 2012. This new-build project was recently recognized by the UN as the first Russian Joint Implementation project under the Kyoto mechanism.
In addition to the power station commissioning in Shatura, E.ON is implementing modern and efficient new-build projects at three further sites in Russia, as part of its investment program totalling € 2.3 billion. All in all, E.ON will increase its power station capacities in Russia by 2,400 MW to a total of 11,000 MW, thus helping to meet the growing demand for energy in Russia. E.ON will also seek to gain recognition of its Joint Implementation projects for the three other CCGT plants currently under construction, two in Surgut and one in Yaiva.
