The guests were primarily interested in the issues of the economic efficiency of nuclear power plant operation, environmental and industrial safety as well as new power units construction. During their visit to the nuclear power plant the journalists had a general excursion: they visited the unit control room and turbine island of power unit No.2, examined the construction site of power units Nos. 3 and 4 and met nuclear plant Director Alexander Palamarchuk.
Mass media representatives were interested in the prospects of Rostov NPP new power units’ construction, issues of new safety system improvement and introduction, nuclear plant equipment modernization, and extension of power unit operating life.
When sharing her impressions from the visit and meetings, reporter of the “Trud” (Labor) national republican weekly publication Vesela Vaneeva noted: “I liked the plant. I’vegotonlygoodimpressions. The engineers know their business in the sphere of effective and safe production assurance. It is not the only Russian nuclear power plant I have visited. I was at Tianwan NPP, which is constructed by Russian specialists on the basis of Russian project. And our Bulgarian NPP – Kozloduy is also Russian. These are nice nuclear power plants, we believe in their safety. This is proved by the fact that 70% of Bulgarian adult population supports nuclear power industry development.”
It is not the first time Vesela Vaneeva and some of her colleagues have visited Volgodonsk. In the 90-ies they came to the city as members of Bulgarian delegation, they acquainted with prospects of Rostov NPP construction and commissioning and visited Atommash plant, which produced vessels of the first nuclear plant reactors. “These were not the best years for Russian nuclear power industry. I am glad that now Russian nuclear power industry is rapidly developing and actively entering the world market,” Bulgarian journalists noted.
Summarizing the visit results they noted the openness of the nuclear plant information policy and readiness of its authorities to an open dialogue with public and mass media representatives.
Rostov NPP is a branch of Rosenergoatom Concern OJSC. The nuclear power plant is located on the bank of the Tsimlyansk Reservoir 13.5 km far from Volgodonsk city. Power unit No.1 which was put into commercial operation in 2001 has the operated VVER-1000-type pressurized water reactor with installed capacity of 1,000 MW.
The physical start-up of power unit No 2 with the reactor of the same type was carried out in December, 2009. Power unit No 2 undergoes the stage of experimental-industrial pilot production. Power units Nos. 3 and 4 are being constructed.
