Leningrad NPP: Rostechnadzor has issued a license for further operation of power unit No.4

The Federal Service for Ecological, Technological and Atomic Supervision (Rostechnadzor) has issued a license for further operation of power unit №4 Leningrad NPP for the next 15 years - until December 26, 2025.

Rostechnadzor’s decision issued the license is a recognition of conformity of power unit № 4 with all modern standard safety requirements.
For the purpose of increasing safety of the Leningrad NPP there has been realized for the last decade a large-scale modernization program of the power units relating to all the spheres of safety: nuclear, technical, radiative, fire and physical. Prolongation of the term of operation of the first, second, third and now the fourth power units of the Leningrad NPP – up to 2018, 2020, 2024 and 2025 accordingly is the result of this work.
Physical start-up of the fourth power unit of the Leningrad NPP was carried out on December 26, 1980. For 30 years of operation it has generated more than 185 billion kWh of electric power.
The Leningrad NPP is a branch of «Concern Rosenergoatom» JSC. The NPP is located in the city of Sosnovy Bor, 80 km to the west of St.-Petersburg on the bank of the Finland gulf.
The Leningrad NPP is the first NPP in the country with reactors RBMK-1000 (uranium-graphite nuclear reactors of channel type on thermal neutrons). The NPP operates 4 power units with electric capacity of 1000 megawatt each. Today the Leningrad NPP share in the established capacity of the Northwest amounts to 19%, and according to the balance of the electric power generating - 26,1%.
