Frost does not affect the work schedule of Baltic NPP construction

The works at the site of Baltic NPP construction in Neman City are carried out day and night despite the frosty and snowy winter which is not typical of Kaliningrad region.

According to Deputy Director for Capital Construction of Directorate of constructed Baltic NPP Andrey Garusov, the works are performed in accordance with the work and subject schedules. A.Garusov noted that the frost even helped them perform some kinds of works. For example, they got the opportunity to start works at the sites access to which was difficult due to autumn muddy season.
Currently, land planning of the industrial site and construction base has been completed by 50%. Ten kilometers of the external electrical networks have been laid. Commissioning and start-up works at the transformed plants are being performed. Adjustment of the equipment at such important site as the ready-mix station is continued: in April, the builders are to supply concrete under the first power unit. Erection of the buildings for fittings production has been started. The erection of office building steel structures has been completed. Road building is coming nearer the end.
The number of employees engaged in construction amounts to 417 persons. Alexander Scherikanov, Director of a branch of Severnoye upravleniye stroitelstva OJSC being the general contractor, noted that labor productivity is increasing too as compared with the autumn period. “We will not allow any failures despite such weather conditions”, he assured.
The foundation stone of Baltic nuclear power plant was laid on February 25, 2010 in Neman district of Kaliningrad region. The plant is being constructed on the basis of the NPP-2006 project and will consist of two power units of total capacity equal to 2,300 mW. The first power unit is to be started up in 2016, and the second one – in 2018. The purpose of the plant is to supply power to Kaliningrad region and abroad. For the first time in the Russian nuclear power industry private investors, including foreigners, are invited to participate in the project. They can get a share of up to 49% in the Baltic NPP project. At present negotiations with potential investors are being continued.
