This event is preliminary classified as a "below-scale event" by the seven-grade International Nuclear Events Scale (INES), i.e. has no impact on the plant and the personnel safety.
At present Kola NPP operates three power units bearing the total load of 1 323 MW in accordance with the dispatch schedule. No violations of limits and conditions of safe operation of power units have been registered.
The radiation situation in the area of Kola NPP location and in the 30 km control area does not differ from the natural environmental background.
Kola NPP is a branch of Rosenergoatom Concern OJSC. The plant is located 200 km to the south of Murmansk on the bank of Lake Imandra. It generates about 60% of electric power in Murmansk region. Currently, the plant operates 4 power units with VVER-type reactors. Each reactor has capacity of 440 mW. Kola NPP supplies power for Murmansk region and Karelia.
