Pavlogradugol Commissioned the First in Ukraine Industrial Heat Pump Unit for Mine Water Heat Utilization

Января 27, 2011

The first in Ukraine and the most efficient on the former Soviet Union territory heat pump unit has been commissioned at Blagodatnaya Mine, Pavlogradugol (DTEK). Mine water heat will be used for heating and hot water supply of the coal mine.

In future, it will completely substitute a coal fired boiler-house, which will create opportunities not only for a considerable reduction of hot water treatment operational costs, but also for the elimination of pollutant emissions. The project investments made up about UAH 3.9m. The project is implemented within the framework of DTEK Environmental Protection Policy*. The successful practices will be also extended to the other Company’s enterprises.
The unit thermal capacity is 800 kW. The 7-hour operating cycle enables the 120 m3 output of 450С water. To produce 800 kW the heat pump unit consumes 220 kW electricity.  The remaining 580 kW is taken from the water that is pumped up out of the mine. Thus, the heat production is 3.6 times higher than the electricity consumption.
Before the commissioning of the heat pump unit, pumped-up water after primary treatment and disinfection was dumped into special reservoirs, and significant amounts of low-grade heat were lost.
When manufacturing the unit, the preference was intentionally given to national manufacturers of such equipment to cut capital expenditure substantially.
The engineering solution, including the main equipment parameters, was tailor-made by the specialists of National Mining University (Dnepropetrovsk city) for Pavlogradugol (DTEK). Thanks to well-coordinated and prompt work, it took only 8 months, from the elaboration of the engineering solutions to the commissioning of the unit.
In future the specialists of National Mining University are expected to carry out analysis and make their conclusion with the regard to the possibility to use the similar unit at the other DTEK mines.
