Works of unit 2 reactor defuelling have started at Ignalina NPP

One of the most significant State Enterprise Ignalina Nuclear Power Plant Decommissioning stages – unloading of spent nuclear fuel from Unit 2 reactor and transfer of it into the storage pools – started on 1 February.

The Fuel Part Unloading Programme was developed by the specialists of INPP Decommissioning Projects Management Service Nuclear Fuel Department. The Programme has been agreed with State Nuclear Power Safety Inspectorate (VATESI).
This Programme is also the part of the Decommissioning Project for INPP Unit 2 Final Shutdown and Defuelling Phase (U2DP0). It foresees unloading of 500 fuel assemblies from the second reactor of the power plant and transfer of them to the storage pools.
All spent nuclear fuel will be transferred from the storage pools to the Interim Spent Fuel Storage Facility (ISFSF, Project B1) after the permission for its operation is received.v Defueling and fuel transfer to the storage pools will also be performed by INPP specialists on their own.
