The required calculations, including analyses of construction pit slope stability and analysis for determining the stress-strain state of the concrete dam, as well as elaboration of a geomechanical model of its foundation were fulfilled by « Institute Hydroproject » - «Geodynamic Research Center » The peculiarity of the project is the location of the dam in the Kingdom of Bhutan in Himalaya Region with high seismicity and complicated geological conditions. According to Alla Karpinskaya, the Chief Design Engineer, the expected seismic activity in the region is about 9 points, which conditioned a special approach to designing.
According to Pavel Shestopalov, General Director of the «Institute Hydroproject », «hydropower potential of Bhutan is of interest first of all for India with its growing electric energy consumption. In its turn the institute has a vast experience in designing hydraulic structures all over the world in various natural conditions, including the regions with high seismicity».
Sankosh project is designed on the territory of the Kingdom of Bhutan. It includes 285 m high concrete gravity dam and an underground power house. The design capacity of HPP is 4000 МW.
