Novovoronezhskaya nuclear power plant was commissioned in 1964 and became the first plant to use a VVER-type reactor, acknowledged as one of the safest in the world. Each of the reactors in operation at the power plant is a main prototype for the VVER-440 and VVER-1000 -series pressurized water reactors manufactured at Izhorskiye Zavody.
The contract for manufacturing and delivery of energy equipment for Novovoronezh NPP-2 was signed in 2007 and involves the production of two primary equipment kits for the VVER-1200 reactor, including reactor vessels, steam generator shells and internal vessel equipment with overall weight of over 3500 tons. The first unit at NPP-2 is to be commissioned in 2012.
VVER-1200 reactor for Novovoronezh NPP-2 is the III+ generation head unit of the NPP-2006 project. The project incorporates a number of design enhancements that ensure increased safety according to the most stringent international requirements, improve the operational parameters and increase the life cycle of the unit to 60 years.
