The national report has been prepared in accordance with State Enterprise Ignalina Nuclear Power Plant's (INPP) report on accomplished "Stress Tests" which was submitted to VATESI on 25 October 2011 and in accordance with provided by INPP plan of measures for implementation of report recommendations which was submitted on 21 December 2011.
During performing "Stress Tests" at Ignalina NPP additional safety assessment has been accomplished for two final shutdown power units and spent nuclear fuel storages which are in operation and construction respectively in case of potencial earthquake, flooding, loss of electrical power, loss of ultimate heat sink and other incidents, accidents or extreme factors. Presented results of "Stress Tests" report has demonstrated that appropriate measures are provided at INPP to be taken in order to ensure safe operation of INPP and storage facilities and to protect people and environment from the harmful effects of radiation in the case of incident or emergency at INPP for a variety of adverse factors.
"Stress Tests" are additional detailed and transparent risk and safety assessment during which safety of all nuclear power plants' in European Union must be revised. Decision to carry out "Stress Tests" was adopted by European Council on 25 March 2011 as a response to events at Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant in Japan.
