A New Free Release Technique Has Been Approved at Ignalina NPP

Января 23, 2012

At SE Ignalina Nuclear Power Plant a new free release technique of large bulky objects has been approved by the Czech company's ENVINET specialists. This procedure will allow to extend the possibilities of Free Release Measurement Facility B10.

The new procedure will allow to measure large bulky objects despite their shapes and sizes. This technique can also be applied when the objects' size and weight excess the standards of the facility B10. Thus, not only the possibilities of the facility are extended, but also size reduction costs of waste that is produced during dismantling works are reduced.

Equipment installed at the facility B10 provides centralized identification of the radionuclide contamination level of materials generated during dismantling of the nuclear power plant. If the radionuclide contamination of the materials does not exceed the free release levels, these materials will be transported to the conventional dump or reused without application of the radiation safety requirements. Such waste management is cost-effective and environmentally friendly.
