European Parliament Budgetary Control Committee Delegation Visited Ignalina NPP

Июля 15, 2012

Members of European Parliament were interested, how the EU financial support for Ignalina nuclear power plant (INPP) decommissioning was used, also the ongoing and implemented decommissioning projects were presented to the members of delegation.

INPP General Director Ž.Jurkšus presented the progress of decommissioning projects, planing of the whole decommissioning process and radioactive waste management processes. According to the director, Ignalina NPP is implementing the unique project in the world - dismantling of RBMK-type graphite reactors. For this reason, presently there are no experience and technological solutions in order to dismantle them, consequently, implementation period and costs of this project are higher.

European parliamentarians questioned, how much revenue Lithuania has lost prematurely terminating operation of two Ignalina nuclear power plant‘s 1500 MW RBMK type reactors and whether the extention of INPP operation to the scheduled time would help to accumulate sufficient funds in National Decommissioning Fund to finance Ignalina NPP decommissioning process. INPP General Director also answered the questions about implementation progress and delays of Interim Spent Fuel Storage Facility (project B1) and Solid Waste Management and Storage Facilities (project B234).

European Parliament delegation visited inside the power plant and were introduced to the accomplished projects and ongoing dismantling activities. According to the members of the delegation, so far they did not imagined the dimension of INPP decommissioning project and the scope of activities that are carried out.  European parlamentarians also visited B1 (Interim Spent Fuel Storage Facility) and B234 (Solid Waste Management and Storage Facilities) construction sites.
