The unit meets the latest environmental safety and power efficiency standards. It uses a combination of gas and steam turbine units in a combined cycle to produce additional heat and electricity thus increasing the overall energy efficiency. With 52.5% energy efficiency, the new power generation unit significantly outperforms traditional gas turbine units (35-40%) while reducing fuel consumption up to 20-25% compared to steam power plants.
The new power generation unit of Urengoyskaya TPP will help to address electricity shortage in the northern part of Tyumen region.
“The launch of 450 MW CCGT at Urengoyskaya TPP is yet another proof of INTER RAO UES Group’s reliability, focus and ability to deliver on its commitments to the state, investors and shareholders. Construction of new power generation facilities helps to satisfy growing nationwide demand for electricity, and a project of such magnitude in a remote location is a unique achievement for our company and the whole national energy industry alike,” said CEO of INTER RAO UES Boris KOVALCHUK.
Urengoyskaya TPP was launched in August 1987. With 474 MW of installed capacity, it employs 289 staff. Urengoyskaya TPP is located on the shore of Lake Yamylymuyaganto 70 km south of the Arctic Circle within city limits of Novy Urengoy (Tyumen Oblast, Yamalo-Nenets Autonomous Okrug). The power plant operates in harsh environmental conditions and permafrost, and is the first stationary plant built in Yamalo-Nenets Autonomous Okrug. Urengoyskaya TPP is a subsidiary of JSC INTER RAO — Electric Power Plants.
