The objective of the inspection – to assess the Ignalina NPP compliance with established nuclear safety requirements related to accident prevention and management.
During the visit the implementation of the INPP action plan based on the accomplished „Stress Tests“ results and conclusions was inspected. Moreover the INPP compliance with requirements of normative technical documentation was examined. The information on the accident prevention during operation of the Ignalina NPP and other related activities as well as information on potential improvement of documents for emergency management was collected. A special attention was paid to the inspection of technical condition of emergency mobile diesel generators that are used for management of beyond design basis accidents. The inspection concluded that all measures planned for 2012 have been implemented. VATESI positively evaluated activities and readiness of Ignalina NPP to respond to potential nuclear and radiological accidents.
"Stress Tests" are additional detailed and transparent risk and safety assessment during which safety of all nuclear power plants' in European Union is revised. During performing "Stress Tests" at Ignalina NPP additional safety assessment has been accomplished for two final shutdown power units and spent nuclear fuel storages which are in operation and construction respectively in case of potential incidents, accidents or extreme factors. Presented results of "Stress Tests" report has demonstrated that appropriate measures are provided at INPP to be taken in order to ensure safe operation of INPP and storage facilities and to protect people and environment from the harmful effects of radiation in the case of incident or emergency at INPP for a variety of adverse factors.
